The placement learning agreement

An important part of the first weeks of the placement will be the initial placement meeting to discuss the placement learning agreement. The learning agreement is a shared document and is a practical resource which will be used throughout the placement to address practical issues, learning needs and opportunities and also to form the basis of a working agreement between the student, the placements and the HEI. The learning agreement needs to be a flexible, fluid and living document that is completed near the start of the placement to set out the practice learning arrangements and which can also be referred to and amended as the placement proceeds and circumstances may need to be altered.

Although each HEI may have different formats for the learning agreement, the process of completing the document and meeting together to talk through the arrangements is likely to occur within the first few weeks of the placement and will involve you as the student, the personal tutor from the university, the practice educator and the work-based supervisor where this is applicable. The completion of the agreement is a shared task between the student and the practice educator and is likely to contain the following general headings:

• Contact details for all key people (student, tutor, practice educator and work-based supervisor).

• Profile of the agency and the key services provided. Student can complete this.

• Induction checklist and practical arrangements such as regular meetings, dress code, procedure for notification of absences, induction plan, arrangements for supervision and discussion about the students learning needs have taken place. Completed by the practice educator.

• Procedures for dealing with concerns and complaints and other key policy documents including health and safety and the roles and responsibilities of the student, tutor, practice educator and supervisor. Shared responsibility for completion.

• Insurance and placement-related travel arrangements for the student during the placement to clarify the cover and payment provided if a car is required to transport service users and if insurance cover is needed. Shared responsibility for completion. additional support that the student may access following a declaration of any learning support needs by the student. Shared responsibility for completion.

• Additional support available for the student. This refers to any

• Student documentation. This would include the student’s placement application form for the first placement and also the student’s Personal and Professional Development Plan, and a copy of the student’s first placement portfolio will be needed for the second placement. Student’s responsibility. confidentiality statement which should be read carefully, adhered to and signed by the student. Student’s responsibility. built-in time available for reflective learning and study (about half a day a week) to be negotiated. Decided by the practice educator through negotiation with the student.

• Confidentiality statement. Each service setting should have a
